Swift Path Solutions has been very close to the sister fraternity of Cytology that has historically had more clout in the Uganda pathology space. We were therefore quite proud to be part of the very first East African Symposium on Clinical cytology and first Annual Scientific Conference for the cytology society of Uganda which was held on the 19th and 20th of October 2022 under the theme,” the role of cytology in Early disease detection and cancer diagnostics”. This event was attended by various delegates from different countries like Kenya, Zambia, Kingdom of Iswatini and Uganda. More particularly Swift Path Solutions came forth as a partner and supplier of cytology lab consumables.
Some of the presentations made were;
- Cervical and breast cancer screening programs which emphasized the BRC1 and BRC2 types of genes diagnosed in women, by Dr.Josephine Rioki from University Of Nairobi.
- Fine needle aspiration cytology which focused on the appropriate way of collecting samples from the thyroid of a patient. by Dr.Dan Wamala from The Pathology Department of Mulago National Referral Hospital.
- Best practices on slide preparation and reporting for accurate results in diagnosis.
The occasion was graced by the presence of Dr. Suzan Nabadda, the Commissioner of Nathional Health Laboratory and Diagnostic services and Chief government Pathologist at the Ministry of Health in Uganda.
Annet Nabagala, a biomedical scientist at Central Public Health Laboratories and National coordinator for NCDS at MoH-NHLDH,assured Cytotechnicians of more opportunities in the health sector through setting up of cytology laboratories in the regional referral hospitals in Uganda.
The two days event was successful, interactive and most importantly informative since presentations were diverse and expounded on challenges and solutions in cytology.
The Challenges raised at the time included; Unreliable supply of products and services brought about by a lack of focus on Histopathology and Cytology by suppliers. Another challenge was the poor quality inputs availed on the market which directly affects the 'patient lab results' and widely impacts this area, leading to lack of trust and loss of reputation, wasted money, thriving black market which leads to loss of income from legitimate suppliers among others.
