- In Harris’ Hematoxylin the active chemical species is the complex formed by hematein (hematoxylinoxidized by potassium iodate) with potassium aluminum sulfate.
This complex has a positive charge andis therefore able to bind to anionic sites present in the chromatin histone proteins
